Microchipping

What Is Microchipping?

A pet microchip is a small electronic chip, about the size of a grain of rice, that is implanted under your pet’s skin and contains a unique number that the scanner can read.

Once your pet’s been microchipped, you’ll receive confirmation from a registered database containing an ID or reference number, plus your pet’s microchip number.

Microchipping is quick and easy, providing a lifetime of peace of mind.

Benefits Of Microchipping Your Pet

WON’T GET LOST OR BREAK

A microchip is permanent and has its own identifying number for your pet. You might also want to add a tag to the collar that has the phone number for the microchip database.

QUICK & EASY PROCEDURE

A microchip is made of surgical grade glass, Insertion of a microchip is more like an injection between the shoulder blades and less like surgery. No anaesthesia is needed.

LASTS A LIFETIME

You won’t have to get another chip. Nothing will wear out. It has no moving parts that can malfunction, and no battery that can die and need replacing or recharging.

DATA IS PRIVATE & SECURE

Scanning a chip will only give access to a unique set of numbers which leads to a microchip company who will give your contact information to the vet or other staff.

UPDATE ANYTIME, ANYWHERE

It’s always possible to update your data, and your pet isn’t physically involved in the process. Be sure to contact the microchip company if you move or if any other information changes. Giving them information for one or more secondary contacts such as friends or family is a good idea in case you are not readily available.

ONE-TIME COST

The microchip requires no maintenance and never has to be replaced.

How Do I Update My Pets Microchip Details?

If you move to a new house or change your phone number, you must contact your microchip database provider to let them know.

It’s simple to update the details for your dog’s microchip; you can do it online, by telephone, or by post – depending on which database your chip is registered to.

If you are unsure who your microchip provider is there are sources online that can identify your microchip database provider, such as check-a-chip.co.uk.
If you do not know your pet’s microchip number, simply pop into the practice and we will scan your pet to identify their microchip number and also the database provider.

Is Microchipping Law?

DOGS

It is a legal requirement for all dogs in England to be identifiable with a microchip.

CATS

A new UK law means all cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach 20 weeks of age.

RABBITS

Microchipping your rabbit is not law, however, if your rabbit escaped, microchipping can help to identify your rabbit and reunite you quicker.
